Anna Shimonovitc - Week 4: Originality Is a Scam That I Will Fall For

Stop rebooting shows and re-making movies! Please, they are all terrible. Most of them suck. I don't think there is a single live-action remake of a Disney movie that wasn't either hated or debated. Why? Just for the money? Okay, actually that makes sense. But please just make new movies. I think there's a new Disney movie called Wish. Do more of that, Disney! Seriously, what is happening? Has anyone liked any remakes or sequels done recently?
These movie executives, or whoever green lights these remakes, needs to be stopped. I know there have been plenty of good movies lately but everything based on something or a sequel of something. At least the significant ones. Or the ones that I watched, because this is my opinion and I don't have to give any facts. The point is: where is the originality? Where is the completely new idea. I mean I know it's hard to make original anything. There's probably a saying about ideas never being original, but to know for sure I'd have to google it or ask someone, and I don't want to. I just can't stand when I watch a movie that was clearly meant to be a stand alone, but since it was popular was turned into a tv show or something a few years later (Willow is the exception and I will physically fight for it).
There are some good ones, or ones that I am looking forward to. Like Harry Potter was so iconic and even though it was different from the books, it is so popular that I don't have a right to argue about it. The Percy Jackson movie was terrible. That is definitely one of the low-effort attempts at capitalizing on nostalgia. I am so excited for the new show that's coming out, though. Since the author of the books was actually involved, it seems like it will be a way better adaptation than the movies. Maybe the best live-action adaptations of books are the ones that are barely legible in the origianls. Like  The Umbrella Academy and Paper Girls. Maybe the more confusing the comic books are, the more the writers have to make up for. On that note, I'll be waiting for every graphic novel that Raina Telgemeier wrote to be adapted to live action. Until then I'll complain about every live-action remake, sequel, or reboot to ever exist.

What do you think? Do you like remakes or sequels of shows or movies? Or do you prefer the plot to finish within one decade?

*The live action Aladin is also an exception.

Comments

  1. I am on both sides. I feel that constantly remaking the same movie over and over again just gets repetitive, yet people still go because of the name of the movie which urges movie companies like Disney to keep doing it. It's not only Disney who is doing this either. There has been at least 4 batman movies about the same concept just with different actors that I can recall. People want new things. However, I do like some of the live action remakes because it gives a more personal approach rather than animated which is obviously made up.

  2. I think as more money is acquired because of name brand material instead of an actual good product, less good movies will be made. I'm so excited about every star wars movie and TV show but they often disappoint because they are just trying to capitalize on the popularity of the franchise. I always appreciate new good ideas over ones that are slate and overused.
