Cameron Nikpour Week 1 - Becoming a Chair with Lumbar Support

I spent this summer going to camp. In it, we occupied ourselves with activities called electives, which were essentially us choosing whichever pastime we wanted. When I was picking these, I saw a peculiar-looking activity; Improv. Not knowing what else to pick, I chose it to be my elective that week. My first time at the Improv period was interesting, to say the least. The first thing I learned was the "rules" of Improv. These rules were:
  1. No Cheez-Its
  2. No Left hands
  3. No props

    1. To get out of the scene, you somersault
    2.  To get into the scene, you cartwheel
  4. Any rule violation will be punished with crabwalks
  5. Minion (the person running it) was the top dog
  6. Freeze when Minion says so, and unfreeze only when he says so
That was my first exposure to this, and I loved it. Over the course of the weeks I chose Improv as my elective, and we played many games. One of my favorites was "dating game." In this game, we had one bachelor/bachelorette, who would be on a dating show where there would be three contestants, which could be anything, from a royal corgi to a chair with lumbar support (which I played the role of). I ended up enjoying this so much that after the summer had ended, the person I hardest time saying goodbye to, aside from my bunkmates, was Minion. I loved this class so much that now I have brought it over home, and my friends and I played "dating game" during lunch in school.
What'd you have fun doing that you never expected to?

Comments

  1. Great read - although I have never tried improv it seems fun! One thing that I had fun doing that I never expected was going on college visits. When I went to visit my first school with my older sister, I went in open minded with absolutely no expectations other than that it would be boring. However, it surprised me how interesting it is to see new environments and new cultures.

  2. I have many questions about the "No Cheez-Its" rule, but that's not important right now. I didn't expect to enjoy working at a summer camp for the second time this summer. And I didn't, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I got to work with two year old kids for a week, which was great because they take naps for hours and I'm not legally allowed to change their diapers.

  3. I can totally see you being great at improv! It pulls on that creative part of your brain. Believe it or not, something I never expected to enjoy but love is teaching AP Lang! I always said I didn't want to teach it, but once I started, it's become my favorite class to teach!
