Owen Sturm- Week 2- College Football Isn’t That Good

Before you attack me for this “blasphemous” take, understand the number one team last year in the country, Georgia, and the number two team in the country, TCU, played in the National Championship game last year. The National Championship game is the biggest college football game of the year and is the equivalent of the college football Superbowl. With the two best teams in the country playing on the biggest stage, the game must be good. Right? Well if you like blowouts it was the best game in history.  TCU lost to Georgia 65-7. A 58 point differential between the top two teams in the country. Never in NFL history has a superbowl has a team been beaten that badly. You might think this is a super rare occurrence but it's not. Just this week, LSU beat Grambling State by 62, Penn State beat Delaware by 56, FSU beat Southern Miss by 53, and  Oregon State beat UC Davis by 48. The talent of college football is too spread out for many teams to be competitive so most games every week end in blowouts.

Another problem with college football is that the players are much worse than the NFL. College football players are still incredible athletes, but compared to NFL players they aren’t even good. The NFL draft is a seven round draft where the best college players across the country get selected into NFL teams. After a college player is drafted, they get four years on a “rookie deal” and if they are in the 1st round, the teams get the option to have them for another year on a cheap deal. Usually, if a player is good, they get the 5th year option. 70% of the first round picks between 2010-2017 didn’t get the option. Those 32 players were the best in all of college football that year and 70% of them couldn’t play at a high enough level to get that 5th year option. That proves the talent level in college is not close to the level in the NFL.

I still believe being a college football fan is exciting during big games but with most of the games being blowouts and the players not being as good as NFL players, College football is a much worse sport than NFL football. Do you think college football is better than the NFL? Why?

Comments

  1. I totally agree - College football is nothing compared to the NFL. Football is my favorite sport. I watch the NFL anytime there is a game on, and I watch the game to its entirety. College football just doesn't do it for me. Most of the time, when I turn on a college football game when I am bored, I end up turning it off within 10 minutes of the game because most of the time it is a very good team versus an awful team, leading to a blowout. However, even when there are good teams playing against each other, there are still blowouts. Like you mentioned, the college football championship last year ended in a blowout - I ended up turning off the 20 minutes in. College football is nothing compared to the NFL and will never be unless they change it up a lot soon.

  2. I can agree with you that NFL is way better then College Football. While college has its perks, nothing can beat that NFL football experience. I can say that I believe College football overtime rules are better than NFL. The fact that each team gets a chance to score rather than sudden death for NFL, just makes it so much better. However, in the end, nothing compares to NFL football.
