Elai Avidor - Week Two; Golden Oldies

To continue on last week's topic, this week, I want to talk about aging and, more specifically, growing old. Many people fear aging because of all the things it symbolizes. Getting older means having a deteriorating body that can’t do all the things it used to do. Cosmetic brands use this to their advantage by targeting products to make people look and feel “young.” Celebrities are criticized and ostracized for aging and wrinkles, meanwhile, staying young and looking youthful is what all these companies tell us is most attractive. Instead of embracing our natural progression, we are told to do anything we can to prevent it.
Aging also means our days are numbered, time is running out, and the clock is ticking. Any way you word it, it's depressing. But there is beauty in age; growing old means growing in general. Old people have experience, wisdom, and a perspective on life that others can’t understand. They have been through life's highs and lows and can teach others many valuable lessons.
Many people don’t realize how much they can learn from older people's knowledge and insight. Instead of getting treated with the respect they deserve, elderly people are often ignored and underappreciated. However, this is a double-edged sword because sometimes some older people believe this themselves and act as though it is an excuse to behave poorly, but no one is perfect, and some old people aren’t mean at all.
Aging is difficult to accept because, eventually, no matter how you live your life, all stories end the same. Our time on this earth is limited, but we must cherish it and, when it is over, be happy that we were able to experience it to begin with.
What do you think of growing old? Are you worried about it, or are you excited to grow and change as life goes on?

  1. I think that this is a great thing to write on. To answer your questions. I think that growing old is a normal thing to happen to everyone. it is something that happens over time and we cant stop it. although people think getting old is bad, i personally think that as you get older you get more wiser and you have a more experienced life. you also get to see more things you never did as a kid and get to go places you never could have thought of going as a kid. I am also very excited to grow as a person because I believe there are things that i have not learned yet that I am excited to learn.

  2. This is such an interesting topic! I think that aging is something that comes with time and is good for the growth of people, not everyone should stay the same forever. Though I am a little afraid to grow up, I am also really excited for it.

  3. Well, thanks for the existential crisis. I think growing old can definitely be terrifying, but we should change our perspective on it. Everything is much less scary if you focus on the positive, so aging should be treated the same.

  4. Life only has meaning if it ends. If we had infinite time nothing would matter because everything would be done with no risk. Aging and dying gives life a meaning and purpose. Changing, as you get older, isn't scary, rather it's just life.
