Jayden Kahn - Week 3; Social Media and Why it Sucks

Social Media: how to use it safely - NCSC.GOV.UK

Social media comes in many forms: scrolling through videos, looking at pictures of others, talking to friends, sending pictures to friends, and more. However, it is one of the biggest problems in society today. Not only is it a massive distraction to people, but it also can lead to anxiety, overthinking, ADHD, bullying, depression, and in the worst cases, suicide.

Social media is consuming kids' youths and adults' free time. Social media thrives off of these teenagers getting addicted to their platforms and scrolling for hours without even realizing it. Ever since society went into lockdown due to the pandemic, people's screen time, which is directly related to social media use, has drastically increased by over an hour a day according to an article posted by Forbes. This leads to a lack of productivity. Furthermore, according to legacycommunityhealth.org, the additional use of social media has made people 53% more likely to experience ADHD symptoms, which is directly correlated to not being able to focus.

On a separate note, social media also leads to anxiety, depression, and bullying. These are all closely related as one can lead to the other. However, the most significant thing that social media has increased is suicide, which is tied to anxiety, depression, and bullying. Cyberbullying has become more and more frequent in society today, where people purposely put others down via social media platforms. According to news-medical.net, cyberbullying is prone to causing increased anxiety, depression, and damaged mental health in the victim, all of which are key factors in suicide cases.

I realized that social media was an issue and I deleted some of the most time-absorbing apps, Instagram and TikTok, to maximize my time and stay productive. I had a lot more time on my hands and was able to actually hang out with friends in person instead of through a phone. I was also able to use this extra time to get more work done and be productive. While this was amazing, I did not anticipate some of the other effects that came with this. My mental health has gotten substantially better and I am not in my own head as much. I have also been more productive and have been using my time wisely. Overall, removing most forms of social media from my life has made me a better person and has allowed me to achieve more. I feel that there is more harm than good from social media and I wish there was a way to limit or get rid of social media to its entirety.

What are your thoughts on social media and what are you going to do about it?

Comments

  1. I also think social media causes more harm than good. Although I should do more to avoid it, like deleting the platforms that I hardly use, and don't enjoy when I do. But for now I try to only go on certain apps when I have an exact purpose, to avoid scrolling and getting distracted, and not looking at any comments to avoid hate. And when I see something that is just pure anger and bullying I get off the app and do something else.

  2. I think that social media is bad for us humans. Obviously it takes out time in our day to be doing things productive. It can give us a break sometimes, but it is not good to excessively watch tv like I do when there are football games on.

  3. I think that social media is just another way humans distract and entertain themselves, however it has gotten out of hand. It is not healthy to spend hours a day on a screen. People should have in person experiences, not virtual.
