Week 2: FOMO

In today's world, we have a constant need for popularity and excitement in our lives.

FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, is a feeling most of us have felt before. It is that voice telling you that someone is living through that thrillful, amazing experience, while you are solely missing out. With everyone attached to social media, we begin to compare ourselves to others. Everyone wants to live someone else's life and become unsatisfied with the life they have. People feel the need to live the life of partying, going out, and attending every social gathering and event, and yet leave no time to themselves. I for one have felt FOMO. For example, I was home on a weekend and started scrolling through social media. I saw people I know going out and having an exciting time. In that moment, I felt as though I was wasting those prime years of my life by myself, doing nothing.

Through days of being by myself and not constantly looking for a moment of excitement in my life, I have learned to realize that those days of solitude are much needed. Everyone needs that time alone to reflect and take care of themselves. It is important to be comfortable in your own skin and not care about what others think, feel, or say about you.

Living a social and active lifestyle is never bad, yet it is crucial to prioritize that time to yourself and take a break from reality. Appreciate the life you have and never take it for granted. I know I have felt FOMO many time. Has anyone else felt that need to attend to an event or gathering, as you feel you are going to miss out?

  1. Yes, this is so true and I've definitely felt that way at times. Sometimes you want to go out with friends, but the times when you just want to sit at home and enjoy some alone time are necessary. There have definitely been times when I go to an event that I don't want to just because of FOMO.

  2. Yes, this is 100% accurate. I have definitely felt this before and I am sure everyone else has too. Sometimes I am tired, or there is another circumstance occurring and I am unable to go to some sort of event, party, gathering, etc, but when I see all my friends at these events having fun without me, I feel FOMO. Although, I agree it is important to have that time to yourself to recoup and get back to full form. One way I have dealt with this is just deleting social media such as tiktok and instagram all together to stop getting distracted and focus on myself. This worked for me and may work for you too.

  3. This is very accurate. I always feel like I am missing out on watching a sports game, or missing out on a trend on the internet. The fear of missing out it something really bad that we should not think about. We should enjoy ourselves and work on ourselves everyday rather than fearing on something that won't do anything for yourself.
