Owen Sturm- week 3- Across the Spider Verse is the Best Animated Movie Ever

If you haven’t seen Across the Spider Verse yet please go watch it because there will be spoilers. I recently rewatched the movie Across the Spider Verse and it is breathtaking on a second viewing. The characters, visuals, and view of the multiverse were all on point and the best I have ever seen! It’s crazy that this movie is my favorite animated movie of all time and it doesn’t even have an ending yet.

ATS displays Spiderman better than all the live action movies because of its focus on Miles not just Spiderman. Although many Spiderman movies completely overlook that Spiderman is just a high school student, ATS shows that struggle. The opening scene of Miles is the first to show this as he is late with his meeting with the college advisor because he is fighting Spot. This theme is reinforced when he is late to his Dad’s promotion party, because he was fighting, and ends up disappointing his Dad and embarrassing himself. Many spider man's smaller struggles are written out of the movie like Tom Holland's' Spiderman who is taken in by a billionaire by his second movie.  Miles’ struggle with his grades and making time with his family is why he is a much more relatable and realistic character.

The supporting characters are amazing also. Hobie Brown, a comic book style character whose animation changes by frame, is the most popular character in the whole movie. With his unique design and anarchist way of thinking, Hobie is the embodiment of what Miles wants to be, free. Spiderman 2099, the main opposition to Miles, is also designed with an interesting appearance being a vampire-man hybrid. The best side character was undoubtedly Gwen with her own world and colors as well as her story that shows what could happen to Miles if his parents find out he's Spiderman.

The animation in ATS is the best animation style of any movie because of its change in art style throughout the movie as a result of the multiverse. ATS starts out in an all-pastel world following Gwen, Spiderwoman, through a beautiful monologue and backstory and incorporates a medieval vulture’s art style into the world. They show him in only cardboard cutouts, looking different from the rest of the world, and it works perfectly. After this, they bring in 100s of different spider people, all looking different, on a chase to stop Miles from saving his father and it's still beautiful. Not a single scene in this movie is bad and the variety of seeing different Spiderman all animated differently is amazing. The animators of ATS realize what a multiverse is supposed to be. It's not just a universe where the traffic light colors and cars are different. There are INFINITE possibilities. That means everything does exist so why not make it as varied as possible. The differences between Mumbati, Gwen’s world, and Earth 42 are huge but they are all gorgeous and fit every person in the world no matter the art style. Do you think ATS is the best animated movie ever? Is there something that you felt was incohesive about the world or its characters?

  1. I agree, ATS is truly one of the most movies ever! I think it was a near-perfect story with no issues regarding the characters or the world.

  2. It honestly is one of the best animated movies! The colors, the cinematography, the writing; it's all chefs kiss! I love how they brought the real life theory of multiple universes into the spider man world.
