Owen - week 1- Why extra points and kickers are important

The kicker is known to be the least valuable position in the NFL, but their impact on the field cannot be understated. A kicker's only job is to kick field goals and extra points and yet some kickers are unable to do that. Whether it be the pressure or them just not being good enough, kickers train their whole lives for one job although they fail over ten percent of the time. A common opinion is that field goals and especially extra points aren't important, but that is completely false. One missed extra point can impact team morale as well as the strategy of the coach throughout the game. Going for a two-point conversion typically doesn't even cross the coach's mind unless their team misses a field goal. Kicker's are clearly important in a negative way but if their whole job is to not mess up, why even have kickers at all? The most important reason is game-winning field goals. The thrill when the offense, consisting of the top athletes in the world, gets off the field in the final play of the game for a 150-pound kicker to decide the game is immense. If you ask any Ravens fan they will tell you how cool it is to see your kicker win you a game. Kickers also hold a historic spot in the NFL as one of the first positions brought to the league. Inspired by how rugby players kick the ball, football also wanted to have a system like that so they implemented kickers. Kickers have an interesting role in the game of football with how impactfully they affect the game negatively, but they can never be gotten rid of because of the joy of game-winning field goals and the historical significance they hold.  So, while fans may make jokes about kickers, like "How did the kicker win the lottery? With a kick of luck", their role in securing wins is no joke.

  1. I agree with everything said here. Kickers have so much pressure on themselves and they don't get as many chances as every other position player.

  2. Many a game has been won or lost because of the kicker! I didn't realize that it was because of Rugby that they have kickers!
