Elai Avidor - Week One; Baby Talk

Babies are something very unique. They represent one of humanity’s most significant weaknesses. Whether a baby animal or a baby human, they always evoke strong emotions and make us act in ways we usually wouldn’t. We all have that random baby voice we make when we talk to one or the uncontrollable smile that fills our faces. Their happiness and laughter is infectious, and when a baby is sad, all you want to do is make it happy (maybe you just want to shut it up, but who am I to judge).

Being a baby has many advantages; if I told you that you had to save either a grown man or a baby, most likely, you would pick the baby without hesitation. Time after time, people will always strive to help babies or children. Babies will always be anyone’s top priority, whatever the personal reason. They are incredibly vulnerable and must always be looked after. A grown man can, hopefully, save himself, but who will save the baby?

Babies embody all that is pure and good in mankind. They exist with blissful ignorance and a whole world of opportunities in front of them. I often think of a quote by George Bernard Shaw: “Youth is the most precious thing in life; it is too bad it has to be wasted on young folks.” Although I try to apply it to my life to remember how grateful I should be to be this young, I think it also applies to babies. I and many others wish we could be babies again, even for a little while. Life was once so simple and easy. Everyone has constant things that stress them, whether big or small. Everyone has something to do and priorities that must be done. Life is a hectic whirlwind that never pauses, but now imagine a baby’s life, so simple and easy. Sleep, eat, and get taken care of all day. I don’t want to sound lazy or pathetic, but that sounds like a dream. Maybe being a baby is the easiest thing in life, but I certainly wouldn’t mind going through a bit of that again, if only just to appreciate the simplicity life once had to offer one more time. Do you wish you could be a baby again?

  1. I do wish I was a baby again. It is so annoying being responsible for yourself, and when you are a baby your parents are responsible for you and you don't have to do anything.

  2. I also wish I was a baby again. If I could be a baby with the mind of an adult, I would be happy. Maybe that defeats the purpose of the innocence if you are aware that it is temporary, but the awareness that you could be doing taxes instead (I assume that is what adults do all of the time) could also make it more enjoyable.
