Anna Shimonovitc: Week 7 - Shows are better than movies

I love watching TV. I think we can all agree that TV shows are good. And if you disagree, you're weird, respectfully. But movies are good too. Both movies and TV shows are good sources of entertainment. But which is better? My answer: TV shows. They just are, but if you're not convinced then you're wrong. And let me tell you why.

I don't like sitting through a whole movie. Every time I get excited to watch a movie I immediately realize that I can't get up for the next hour and a half, at least if I'm at a movie theater. Even if I'm at home, I have to either watch the whole two-hour movie or pause it and remember where I left off. But that would never be a problem with TV shows. A TV show is just a long movie series split up into 20 or 40-minute increments. Each season is just a really long movie, that's part of a series of other movies if there is more than one season. Which is perfect for watching one episode a day, or watching a few and convincing yourself it's the same as watching 1 movie. And, TV shows are also way better for pacing. So many movies are originally meant to be more than 2 hours, but have to be shortened, usually by cutting out a bunch of scenes. And that doesn't mean that the plot doesn't make sense, but it might cut out the filler that was there to make it progress better. Even though that does happen with TV shows, I see it less often. The only problem with TV shows' pacing that I see too often is rushing the last season or a few episodes of the show. I know it's probably because they got canceled and weren't planning on it. But what I think is a worse problem is really good shows being canceled after one season when they leave on a cliffhanger because they think they'll at least get one more. I can list many examples of this tragically happening to my favorite shows, but it'll take too long.

The point is that TV shows in general only get worse than movies when they are limited. What do you think, though? Do you prefer movies or TV shows?

  1. I definitely agree with the fact that TV shows are better. It's usually very hard for me to stay focused for an entire 1:30-2 hour movie, unless it is VERY interesting. The only downside to TV shows is that a lot of the time the following seasons get worse.

  2. I don't think tv shows are better than movies but their format holds the viewers constant attention for much longer. Like you said, shows might not ever have an ending but movies always do as they are usually in their own universe that doesn't need a long connected plotline.
