Week-6-Owen Sturm- Being Scared of Roller Coasters is Stupid

This past week, I went to Universal with my school and had a great time. We got to Orlando on Friday, chilled out for 2 days, and went to Universal. Most people on the trip had a great time in Universal and rode at least some of the rides but one of my best friends didn’t want to go on a single ride. Why would you even come to Universal if you didn’t want to go on any rides? He claims that he just doesn’t like them but I knew he was lying. I managed to take him on one ride and he was terrified of a tame ride. People who have genuine claims that they just don’t like the rides are fine by me yet people with claims that they are too scared to go on roller coasters are just ill-informed.

There are just 4 roller coaster deaths recorded this year in the US. Comparatively, Americans are 5000 times more likely to be killed by their own government. You are 23 times more likely to be killed by lightning and a million times more likely to get killed by a car while driving or walking to the park. On top of that 60% of roller coaster deaths are caused by passengers failing to comply with the rules of the coaster. Every ride in any major park is thoroughly investigated and tested so no mistakes occur. Riding a roller coaster isn’t dangerous in any way and isn’t more likely to kill you than anything else. Does this quell your fears about roller coasters or are you still scared?

  1. I used to be super scared of roller coasters, and for the exact reason of feeling like I would die. This definitely helped. I also got over my fear during the shabbaton, I went on all the roller coasters!
