Elai Avidor - Week Eight; The Royal Family

I recently started watching a show called The Crown. It is about the British royal family over the course of the 20th century. I am incredibly fascinated by history, and I love watching movies and shows about it. Before starting the show, I knew embarrassingly little about the royal family. I had no clue who was what or why Megan was so controversial, but after becoming so invested in the show, I have learned so much about them. One of the main reasons why I love the show so much is because of how well-written it is. These characters that are being portrayed are larger-than-life people, and sometimes it is hard to imagine that such legends were even real, but the show cleverly shows their humanity without ever letting us into their heads. It’s brilliant how the writers get you to care for these people, but every so often, they remind you who they really are and their duties.

The show has also given me a greater understanding and appreciation of what it means to be part of the royal family. One of the most significant themes of the show is the duality and constant struggle between being a public figure and having a life dedicated to serving your country and the personal life of being a mortal. These people are put on pedestals close to godhood and are expected to always put their country above everything: their desires, their needs, and their lives. They are forced into this life and have to do it all with a smile, and I love how perfectly they show this struggle.

Another thing I love about the show is how each episode feels like a movie. When watching the show, you can really see the scale, scope, and high budget of the production. Every set, costume, and period piece feels so real, well-made, and monumental. It all comes together to create an environment and atmosphere that shows the significance of these people and their lives. Also, I love how real the characters feel and how invested you become in them.

Have you watched The Crown, and if yes, what did you think?

  1. I haven't watched the show, but it sounds very interesting. The personal portrayal of famous people sounds specifically interesting, maybe I'll watch a few episodes.
