Josh Matheson - Week 3; The Collapse of University of Miami's Football Program
Growing up I have always been a Hurricane. My Dad was a hurricane, my aunt was a hurricane, my other aunt was a hurricane; I am a hurricane through and through. Unfortunately, the University of Miami's football program has been really struggling in recent years. I mean it's hard to root for a team when there aren't enough fans supporting. You would think that the university located near the prime location of Miami would get the attraction, but that is just completely false. UM is a small school, but that does not make up for the fact that UM is a great football school. I mean the school produces a ton of NFL talent players, and continues to do well in the recruiting system. Each year they are able to get at least a few 5 stars to commit which is not usual college football. So far this year, UM is 3-0 and ranked top 20 in the nation, and still managed to have one dollar tickets selling for the Bethune-Cookman game at home last week. As a fan, I hate to see this happen because I feel bad for all of the players on our roster. They decide to choose to play at the school that is best fit for them and they don't get as much support as they would get at any other Power 5 school. Many players, wait their whole lives to play in front of big crowds under the spotlight, but unfortunately the UM players miss out on that experience. College football is a sport that is built of excitement and fan support, along with historic traditions. UM lacks that, as the fans have no pride. This also plays a role in my decision as a student, because going to a school with pride and tradition is a must for me. Fortunately, UM is planning on building an on campus stadium, which will help create a more college feel stadium and also easier access to students who live on campus. Hopefully, this solution can end the empty stadium drought and I can enjoy supporting my team more.
I think building the new stadium will help drive up interest in football at UM. There are other reasons why it as not well supported as the other programs in Florida, UF, like that they were only a ranked team for 10 games the last 3 years.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad to see that even though the team is playing well, has many 5 star recruits, and is in a well known area, it still does not get the attention it deserves. However, if there is a deep rooted issue that Miami finds and addresses, it could change the whole program around. They need to make the school more enticing for players, coaches, and fans. Hopefully this new stadium will accomplish this.
