Jayden Kahn - Week 5; Assignment or Leisure - Making Learning Fun
Where many teachers go wrong when it comes to teaching is that they do not make it fun for the students and lose the students' interest and focus in an instant. They do not think about the student, but rather about a set-and-stone curriculum. By simply giving lectures and boring assignments constantly, the students will get lost and not understand the material. From my own experience, I feel that when I am actually interested in something, it is easier to understand and retain it, but when I am bored, I zone out and do not actually learn anything.
This week, my AP Language and Composition teacher assigned my class an assignment about watching an entire sports game and writing summaries on it. This assignment was relevant to what we had been learning that week (writing concise summaries on long pieces of literature) and fun. On weekends, I normally have sooo much work to do, that I never actually get time to spend on myself. For this assignment, I watched an entire football game, the first I had been able to watch the entire year (keep in mind it is already week 6). Not only did I learn and retain more than normal, but I also got to enjoy my weekend a little bit. Teachers should assign more assignments similar to this that allow students to learn and enjoy. I personally feel that I learned more from this assignment than I have in an entire month in other classes.
Do you feel that it is important to keep learning fun but relevant? Why?
It is super important to keep students engaged in the work as most classes are just a teacher reading of a slideshow. Many teachers don't care about how fun the class is, only how well the information is taught and that is why fun assignments are so unusual but they should be done more.
